STUDENT  ACTIVITIES

Other activities, besides Athletics, which are sponsored by the school or parish include:

Altar Servers: The youth of St. Anne Parish are invited to serve at Mass and other liturgical services. Servers are usually recruited in grades four through eight and are obtained by high school students as well. These students will perform altar serving tasks at any selected Mass service, as well as weddings and funerals. Please see Mary Ann in the rectory office for more information.

Boy Scouts/Cub Scouts: Boys interested in scouting may join St. Anne’s Cub Scout Pack 1478 (grades 1 – 5) or Boy Scout Troop 1478 (grades 5 and up). The Boy Scouts of America encourage boys to learn their duty to God, country, family and self. Scouts learn to make wise decisions, keep themselves healthy, and become self-reliant. They participate in camping, hiking, outdoor exploration, and healthy competition. The Cub Scouts meet as a group at 7 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month and as a grade 2-3 times each month. There is a membership drive in September, although a boy may join anytime. The Boy Scouts meet every Tuesday during the school year at 7 p.m.  For more information, please visit:  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CUBSCOUT1478/.

Chess/Checkers Club: Any 5th through 8th graders who are interested in playing chess or checkers during their lunchtime are invited to join in the activities every Friday. We have several chess and checker boards for all to play. Whether you are a beginner or advanced, we will have fun playing and competing during this time. Any parents who would like to volunteer to oversee the matches are welcome to come. Please see Sheri Yanik for more information.

Drama Club: Our drama club is offered to our Junior High students. Mrs. Rozgowski leads the students practicing various aspects of pantomime, improvisation, and Readers Theatre. Students are learning to interpret stories, words and emotions. We welcome any Junior High student who has an interest in learning more about role-playing and performing with others.

Forensics: St. Anne Catholic Grade School is a member of the Eastside Catholic Forensic League. The league exists to provide students in grades five through eight with an opportunity to participate in a number of oral interpretation and public speaking events. With the leadership of teachers and parents as coaches, students practice acting out literary pieces and memorizing them for competition with other schools in the league. Categories to chose from are Prose, Duo, Poetry, Drama, Multiple, Storytelling and Declamation. Through this experience, students will gain self confidence, the ability to communicate, and the enjoyment and appreciation of a variety of literature. See Mrs. Reed for more details.

Girl Scouts: There are four levels of Girl Scouts that the young ladies of St. Anne have the opportunity to join. At the Kindergarten and 1st grade leves, girls may join the Daisy Girl Scouts. The Daisy program has been around for over 15 years. The program offers your daughter a safe, nurturing, socially enriching experience. The next level of Girl Scouts is Brownies. These young ladies are in grades 2 and 3. The third level is considered Junior Girl Scouts and is available to girls in grades 4 and 5. The final stage is the Cadette Girl Scout. This level is reserved for girls in grades 6 through 8. Each Girl Scout Troop offers girls the opportunity to learn and believe in herself, develop an awareness of others and a sense of personal responsibility; build a sense of personal worth and develop a growing awareness of her world; develop a concept of good citizenship and learn how to work in small groups; and finally, they find guidance as she grows physically, intellectually, socially, emotionally and spiritually. Girl Scout Troops meet twice a month for 1 ˝ hours.

Math Olympiad: Math Olympiad is a National math contest in which only 35 fifth and sixth graders compete once a month for 5 months. The students are invited to join based on their IOWA test scores and teacher recommendations. The test times range from 25 minutes to 30 minutes to complete 5 problems that focus on problem solving skills along with math.

Science Olympiad: This program is aligned with national science standards designed to increase student interest and scores in science, while strengthening problem solving and teamwork skills. These goals are accomplished through classroom activities, research, training workshops and the encouragement of intramural, district, regional, state and national tournaments. The Science Olympiad tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of individual and team events, which students prepare for during the year. The competitions follow the format of popular board games, TV shows and athletic games. These challenging and motivational events are well balanced between the various science disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers and technology. Any students from grades 3-8 are eligible to join this program. The competition date for 6th – 8th graders is in mid-March and 3rd – 5th graders compete in mid-May. “Practices” are held every Friday, from 4:15pm – 5:15pm. For more information, please see Mrs. Cindy Hogan or Mr. David Mecsey.

Ski Club:  This club is for all ages and meets usually once a week during the winter season.  Parents are welcome to join in the the fun.

Service Learning: St. Anne is teaming up with the University of Detroit Mercy and its Leadership Development Institute to form The St. Anne Catholic Grade School Service Learning Program. This is a program for seventh and eighth graders to provide service for others in soup kitchens, churches, etc. Our goal will be to integrate student’s spirituality, service, and leadership. Our program will subscribe to the wisdom of R.K. Greenleaf’s maxim: “If you want to lead, serve first”.

Student Council:  St. Anne Student Council is composed of eighth grade officers, seventh and eight grade class representatives, and moderators.  Officers consist of a President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. The purpose of the student council is to introduce pupils to student government, to involve students in problem solving, and to build the Christian leaders of tomorrow.
